Mixed bred dogs have been around for years and years. Whether it is by accident or intended, people have fallen in love with mutt breeds for decades now. It is not until very recently that “designer” dog breeds have become more popular among the general dog owning population. “Designer” breed is just a fancy way of saying mutt. However, there are many breeders that will pick two breeds of dogs for their specific personality traits, health factors, and appearances to create a prodigy that exhibits specific characteristics of each parents’ breed. Breeds are combined to try to create offspring that might be perfect apartment dogs for individuals still in college with limited space or might have better coats for individuals with a dog allergy. Many of these mixed breed dogs have become household favorites throughout the U.S. and elsewhere. While dog breeding has been a long honored tradition of clear bloodlines and officially recognized papers for purebreds, many breeders and owners are flocking to mixed bred pups. These three dog breeds are some of the most popular mixes today.
Labradoodle
among families throughout the world. As the mix between a Labrador and a poodle, the breed takes genes from two of the most popular breeds out there. Labradors are known for their mild mannered and loving nature. Any lab owner will tell you that the breed is one of the most loyal, dedicated, and sweet breeds available. Poodles are known from their beautiful coats, intelligence, and strong health histories. Combining these two breeds for the most part creates a pup with a wonderful temperament, which is healthy, and stunning. Most mixed breeds like this have the curly coats of the poodle and the head structure of the labrador. It is this coat that many people are drawn to. While it is not definite that the mix breed will inherit the coat of the poodle, many labradoodles are born with the poodle’s hypoallergenic coat.
Cockapoo
The cockapoo is another mixed breed that combines the traits of a poodle with another breed. In this case, a cocker spaniel is bred with a poodle. Breeders work to combine the best attributes of the poodle with the best attributes of the little cocker spaniel. This mixed breed is definitely an adorable mix and has a lot to offer. The cockapoo takes the intelligence, low dander, and light shedding coat of the poodle along with the sturdy build, friendly, and loyal personality of the cocker spaniel. The breed is typically relatively small like a cocker spaniel and can make for an excellent family pet. The cockapoo has a longer lifespan than many other breeds because the mixed breeding can help eliminate many of the health issues that plague purebred dogs. Living between 18 and 22 years, the cockapoo is a healthy and fun breed to own.
Puggle
The puggle is a mixed breed between the ever-popular pug and the beagle. This “designer” breed is an example of deliberate mixed breeding for mostly appearance purposes. No doubt, the puggle is an extremely adorable breed. Typically adopting the unique “smashed” snout of the pug to some degree and the spunk and body type of a beagle, puggles have won the hearts of many individuals. The puggle will often have the curled tail of the pug along with the wrinkled brow. Furthermore, this mixed breed stays relatively small, giving it the slight appearance of adolescence its entire lifespan. While this breed can have fewer health issues that its purebred parents, there is no guarantee that the health issues common to both breeds won’t arise.
